My students need a way to print high quality copies of their newspaper. They put so much time and effort into their writing, and the finished product should be something that reflects this effort and pride! My students need a color copier.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students range from high-level, avid readers and writers to master-level reading- and writing-avoiders. We have comic book lovers, history buffs, die hard Rick Riordan fans, budding novelists, op ed columnists, and students who aren't sure what they're into just yet.
With so much variety of interest and so little time together, we need to make sure that the kids have their voices heard.
This is why when my students come to me with a project they want to try, or a book they want to read, or ideas about how our work in class relates to the larger world, I do my best to make it happen. Middle school is when many kids start discovering their own interests and talents, and with a little help and a lot of listening, we can help them on that discovery.
My Project
A group students approached me about publishing their writing. "But not bulletin board publishing," they said, "Real publishing." This got me thinking; students present wonderful ideas in both their school assignments and their own work. Why don't we present them to the rest of the world with the pride that they deserve?
Enter The Paw Print, a magazine sharing students' stories, their takes on current events, and updates on school affairs.
As a new club trying to get our footing, funding is nonexistent. Because of the school's printing and ink limitations, our first editions are black and white, on plain paper, and hand stapled. The goal of this project is to raise money for a high quality printer for the club, so that the quality of the finished product represents the quality of its contents. Our students' works are exceptional, and we want to use this magazine as a way to create a community through the circulation of our stories and to build confidence in these developing writers. These students deserve to present their ideas in a medium as professional as their writing is. Please help our students express themselves to the fullest extent!
