Professional Growth Through Professional Books

I need a some research-based books to build my professional library with related texts focusing on my new position as a reading specialist to help improve reading test scores and increase students' reading levels.

My Project

Our school's library does not have any books to support my role as a reading specialist. There are a few books to support professional development as it relates to reading instruction for teachers, but I'd like resources to support teachers. This is an area of need and growth as I aim to provide teachers with a professional learning community in which we can all grow as learners. At our school, the reading test scores are low and almost half of our students are reading below their current grade level. The students need explicit, direct instruction as they learn to read and read to learn. With these texts, I will read the information and turnkey in the form of professional learning to the teachers. They can also use the books as resources to guide their instruction. In turn, the teachers can help our students to become better readers through instruction and application from the professional learning, as well. As I always say, professional growth is student growth. The more I learn, the more I can support teachers in providing rigorous instruction to our scholars. The goal is to increase student achievement in the area of reading by providing reasearch-based intereventions and support targeting phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension of literary and informational texts. By learning and gaining an understanding of these pillars of reading, my goal is to help our students improve in reading and increase their reading levels while improving their test scores at the same time.
