This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My profession requires me to be a life-long learner. Each year that I teach, I want to become better for my students.
I am a second-year teacher who is dreaming big!
I work in an inner-city school and plan on contributing to Richmond City Public School's future growth and success. My school faces many challenges and is in "improvement."
It is my goal to not only service my 22 fourth graders but to also contribute to my entire school and the community around it. I believe that to be successful in my goals, I must continue to research best practices and study pedagogy that is proven and successful.
My Project
During my college studies, I was introduced to the Words Their Way word study program. While I was intrigued by the idea of word study and the program, I was also a bit skeptical. What happened to the spelling lists I had as a kid? However, as a growing teacher, I realized how irreplaceable differentiated instruction is. Each book addresses a specific spelling stage to meet them each student at his or her level of need. These books also offer the instructor suggested word lists, activities, and procedures for effective instruction. The card stock and files will allow me to copy and organize my notes and materials for myself, while the document camera will allow me to scan and present information. I plan on working with the other teachers in my building to share the information provided by these books.
My school decided last month to implement this program, giving my coworkers and me the chance to experiment with the material.
However, we have not been given the materials or training to be able to implement this program correctly. These resources will teach me how to use this excellent program correctly.
