My Students
I am entering my 6th year working for the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) as a Speech-Language Pathologist(SLP). I have the privilege of working with phenomenal students, that I am not just teaching, but I am afforded the opportunity to learn from as well. My students are determined to learn, and not become a statistic of their circumstance. I work in a Title 1 school in the heart of Brooklyn. Many of my students are entitled to free lunch, and some are living in temporary housing/shelters.
Although my students are presented with these challenges, I learn from them perseverance, determination, resilience, and hope.
My students are hopeful to learn, determined to overcome life's challenges, resilient against odds, and they persevere through all of these difficulties with open-minds and hearts. I am so proud of the students that I teach!
My students have mild to moderate speech and language delays with various goals to help them become successful in not only an educational environment but within their communities.
My Project
Being a Speech-Language Pathologist requires one to be equipped with the tools to keep up with an ever changing field. The science of Speech and Language changes every day, with successful and necessary research being performed. As with most science related factors, there are factors that do not change, and one that is unchanging is the dire need for speech and language professionals to be able to use the evidence based practices, that research has deemed necessary and effective.
The best and most effective way to do this is by attending Professional Developments that are able to provide the tools and research to support professionals.
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association hosts an annual convention where professionals much like myself, school-based SLPs and SLPs in various settings can learn about the most recent research in the field, network with other professionals, attend numerous professional developments, and learn skills to apply to our practices to become more effective in our roles.
By attending this convention, I am not only honing my skills, and perfecting my craft, but I am learning ways to support my students in reaching their speech & language goals effectively. This convention offers a myriad of workshops that professionals are allowed to choose from, which allows for tailored learning. It would be my hope to attend this conference and participate in workshops that will be beneficial to my student population, as well as my school population and parents.
