Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

New, special, "grown-up" art supplies always make kids feel special, which inspires success, which can lead to real change in their lives. I teach a group of talented artists in my 10th grade Visual Art classes who need that "something extra" to keep their skills growing and engagement levels high. In a school like mine where many students enter with far-below grade level skills and are living in poverty, I, too, often put my time and resources into the students at the bottom. What about those who are succeeding and learning in spite of everything?

At my free, public charter school we lack many of the arts funding and support available to other California public schools. In my small budget, I have room for basic supplies like paint, paper and pencils. Although my students are making thoughtful and engaging art with these resources, I know that expanding their repertoire of art tools will expose them to the possibilities and excitement of the art world.

I would like to offer my students who are working hard and showing dedication the chance to use special supplies: in this case, illustration markers used by professional artists to create portraits, characters, and landscapes. This will allow my students who are already cartooning and illustrating in black and white the chance to learn about color theory and mixing strategies used by professional artists.

Only your donation will allow me to bring these types of special supplies into my art classroom and make it a place that buzzes with excitement. I encourage you to help me give this opportunity to my aspiring artists.
