Problem Solving with Math Manipulatives

My students need base 10 blocks, fish, bug and bear counters, centimeter cubes, pattern blocks, geobands, and other math manipulatives to help us learn our math facts this year in third grade.

My Students

So many of my students are visual learners. Most of them learn by problem solving by using items they can see and manipulate in their hands.

My students are fun and full of energy.

They want to learn as quickly as they can. We are in a school in a suburban area. We have some students who move in and then move out again. I want to help them learn as much as they can while they are in my class.

My Project

After going to a class this summer on problem solving, I had an "Aha" moment. My students need manipulatives so they can discover the strategies we use in math all by themselves. Often, I am teaching them these strategies, but I am hoping with my new training, I can help them discover these strategies on their own. My students need base 10 blocks, fish, bug and bear counters, centimeter cubes, pattern blocks, geobands, and other math manipulatives to help us learn our math facts this year in third grade. The items I have requested like the fish and bug counters, the wooden blocks or the bears are exactly the kind of things my students need in their hands to learn the different strategies we use in math. I am excited to use the problem solving approach to math more frequently with these manipulatives.

The more hands-on experience my students have, the better.

If I can pose my questions correctly, they will be able discover the answer on their own. I am hoping to change the way I teach math by helping them to make their own discoveries.
