My students need outside equipment. We need balls, a basketball net, balancing blocks, toss games, a fun tunnel, and items to create a gross motor obstacle course.
Do you remember what it was like to be at recess on the playground swinging on swings, using the monkey bars and building friendships? My students are not only healing and rebuilding from Hurricane Sandy, but also lost many of the playgrounds they used to do these same activities.
These are 26 amazing and creative children from a low income community.
Our school offers them a black, empty, slab with no playground equipment at all. Their recess time consists of running around with no equipment and unfortunately many cuts and scraps. We have a fenced in area that the children are not excited about at all when they are let outside for some recess time. Many of them just stay in the cafeteria. Many of these children are still healing from Hurricane Sandy and unfortunately, many of the community playgrounds were destroyed or damaged. I would like to provide a playground atmosphere where they can enjoy and explore and be five. A place they can make new friendships and want to play and be creative. Somewhere they can feel safe and enjoy their free choice time with lots of activities to choose from.
My Project
With these new materials, I will be able to provide an enriched learning environment they can share with their classmates and hopefully new friendships. I will be able to help them master their fine and gross motor skills and exercise that many of them so desperately need. These materials will rebuild their excitement of recess and help to replace the laughter and team building skills they once were able to enjoy at the community playground. I want to help them develop important skills they will need in the future to help become great leaders in our country, no matter what they choose to be. These materials will help them develop skills in team building and problem solving, which is so important in their future. Our playground should help these children build strong and long lasting friendships and skills to help them be well rounded students and business leaders some day. I know these materials will accomplish my goal for these children.
I need your help to make this goal a possibility, to let these children enjoy a fun filled, motor orientated, and learn team building skills at recess time that they desperately need to meet success in their future.
These children need a place to feel safe after all that has been in the news lately and rebuild their confidence after many of them were affected directly by the hurricane and still are suffering from the impact. I want to make school an enriched experience for the children.
