Probing Science - Temperature Probes for Dynamic Experimentation

Help me give my students five additional wireless temperature probes, enhancing active participation by all student. These probes allow laboratories that focus on dynamic experimentation, and require only student smartphones as interfaces.

My Students

The students are in an advanced laboratory science (Chemistry or AP Chemistry) who expect to go on to college. They take their classwork seriously and are willing to be challenged with complex concepts and problem solving. They are focused not only on learning about chemistry, but also developing skills in quantitative analysis and problem solving - skills critical to a successful college career. Many of the students are interested in majoring in technology or science based majors in college.

The primary socioeconomic demographic is middle to lower class.

For the most part, they have active family support but do not have extensive financial resources.

My Project

My project involves the purchase of five temperature probes. I received grants last year for a number of different types of Vernier Go Wireless probes; support from DonorsChoose purchased two wireless temperature probes. These probes engage students immediately since they integrate with their smart phones through Bluetooth, a procedure well-known to most students and easily implemented in the classroom. The probes allowed us to perform a number of challenging laboratories, emphasizing a dynamic approach to experimentation and chemical process. The probes collect large amounts of quantitative data quickly and easily, and students gained considerable expertise in the use of graphical and/or statistical computer programs to analyze these large data sets - a critical skill set for students in this computer age at the college level.

Temperature probes are the most commonly used probes in our laboratories, and the additional probes would allow smaller laboratory groups.

Effective laboratories are an active learning process, but when laboratory groups become too large, some students become spectators rather than active players. Additional probes allows for smaller groups and more active participation by all students.
