My Project

I am a 7th grade science teacher. I love this time of year as my students are really beginning to mature, learn the routines and expectations and are at a level of maturity that we can do so many more hands on activities. Earlier in the year it can be a struggle to encourage students to stay in their assigned seats, keep their hands to theirselves and listen to instructions, especially those with attention disorders or other special needs. I also have 2 dual language classes, and it can be difficult for them to stay focused when the lesson is in their second language.

Unfortunately, those behaviors can become a safety risk and therefore result in the class doing fewer labs and hands on activities, and these are the things that make science great.

I sometimes have a class puzzle or fidget that students love taking turns using. I also frequently give prizes for individual students or the whole class to help celebrate responsible behavior and good quality work. I find this has a positive affect at moving the class culture in a more responsible and productive mode. And my goal is to have a strong finish to this year and hopefully encourage this level of positive behavior sooner in the school year next year.

I would love to have some more prizes to help celebrate the students who are doing great work and more class fidgets to help students be more successful who find class challenging. I believe both of these things will help my classes be able to do more hands-on activities and labs both for the remainder of this year and next year.
