Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach 6th grade science at a low-income Middle School. Many of my students enter my school reading far below grade level, which can make it frustrating for them in school.
That's what makes Science such an amazing subject for them--they get to engage with learning experientially.
My students consistently work hard in class to engage with grade-level scientific concepts and skills. To encourage them, I have an incentive system in my classroom to reward students who are progressing. It can be discouraging to encounter challenging concepts and difficult scientific reading. Some have learning disabilities, some are English learners, some are new to the country, and others were just never taught the basic building blocks of reading. However, students feel so empowered as they see how quickly they can grow. I use my prize box to reward both proficiency and growth, so there are many oppotunities to recognize students. Middle Schoolers love to feel seen for the hard work they put into their own education.
