This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work at a middle school where many students are reading far below grade level. Some enter our school needing phonics instruction that is not in the core curriculum, so I teach reading intervention classes.

My students consistently work hard to learn how to decode the single and polysyllabic words they need to be successful in their academic classes.

I have an incentive system in my classroom to reward students who are progressing in their reading skills. It can be discouraging to need phonics instruction in 6-8th grade. Some have learning disabilities, some are English learners, some are new to the country, and others were just never taught the basic building blocks of reading. However, students feel so empowered as they see how quickly they can grow. In just one semester to a year, students can move from not being able to decode CVC words like "kick" to reading complex polysyllabic words like "unpredictable"!
