My Students
My students are 2nd graders in a New York City public school. They are in a dual-language program where they are learning in both French and English.
Half of the students speak English at home, and half of the students speak French at home, but in school, they each spend every second day in each language.
They spend one day in an English classroom, then one day in a French classroom, then they return to the English classroom.
I have about 50 students each year, divided between the two rooms, and I work with a collaborating teacher. These supplies would be used in both classrooms.
My Project
Second graders can be easily distracted by what is happening around them. They want to help, so even something as innocent as dropping a pen can lead to distraction when other students stop working to walk over and pick it up.
Privacy shields help by keeping the visual distraction to a minimum.
When friends move around, raise hands, or play with things at their own desks, privacy shields help students keep their eyes on their own work. This is especially important when students already have difficulty concentrating. By keeping visual stimuli to a minimum, students will accomplish more in less time.
