Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year, I have a class of 24 first grade students. In a short amount of time, we have worked hard to create a classroom culture where all students feel empowered to learn independently. As a teacher, I have felt very driven by a vision in which all of my students receive instruction right in their zone of proximal development. This year, 9 of my students are multilingual learners, and 2 of my students have learning disabilities. In addition, I also have students who have occupational therapy needs (fine motor, sensory), and diverse academic needs.
With this project, I hope to better provide hands on materials, as well as differentiated materials for all my students.
I have been really focused on ensuring all students strengthen their academic needs in foundational skills, while accessing 1st grade grade level content. All the materials I have selected like colored whiteboard markers, play-doh, letter stamps, and pipe cleaners will help students in phonics small group instruction, while also meeting sensory needs. Anchor charts will be a helpful aid during ELD instruction to provide my students with visual aids that are color-coded and tailored around their language needs. In addition, counting cubes and counters will serve as manipulatives in math instruction.
