Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I believe that a great artist, often is not born but that you can achieve mastery through dedication, passion and perseverance. I believe that art can be a tool that can be used to unlock a child’s greatest potential. I seek to create a classroom environment where artwork and relevant information is displayed to forge a space where respect and creativity can flourish- a safe space where students feel free to ask questions, to be themselves and above all to take risks.
Preliminary to every project, I write short mythical stories that allow my students to imagine and later illustrate an idea of what they heard, therefore creating a path for creative collaboration and improvisation.
I reassure my students by telling them that in art and in life there is not such a thing as failure but that every mishap will take them a step closer to success.
My students come from economically disadvantaged and mostly Haitian and Latino immigrant communities. Their excitement to learn about new artists and to experience the creative process is contagious and inspiring. With limited resources, however, I often have to compromise on the complexity of the projects I design to develop their creative skills.
My project will help them expand their knowledge of color, composition, portraiture, and advertising through printmaking. With the help of a color printer, I will provide my students with portrait and commercial product images to use as reference for their drawings. Students will then create a foam block matrix to produce multiple color prints using pens, water-soluble block printing inks and paper through a printmaking process called monotyping.
