At my school I want to give my students the chance to explore as many authentic art media as possible. I want to introduce my students to printmaking using the Gelli plates so they can experiment with lots of unique techniques to get them hooked on printmaking.
My school is beautifully diversified and outstanding.
The students range from low income to middle class. We have been recognized as one of the top high schools in our state and recently won an award for having high success in an urban school district.
My art students are talented and love to experiment with new media and techniques. They enjoy learning about contemporary techniques using innovative materials.
Our art program is highly supported by our school, but funding is difficult and is spread thinly between 3 art teachers and over 300 students within our department.
We are good at recycling and engineering our own materials to match ones currently on the market. I love to collect odd materials to use as project materials for my students. We also never turn down a donation!
My Project
I will use the Gelli plates to introduce my students to monotype printmaking. It is a basic concept that can be diversified with imagination. In using the Gelli plates the students will get acquainted with terms, techniques, and materials associated with printmaking. We will use the plates to discuss and practice the use of mark making in art and other concepts.
Through using this project in my classes I will be able to recruit students to take a full year of printmaking in the next school year. This will help our department offer a wider variety of courses to our students and all them more unique and authentic art experiences.
This project will make a difference for our students because it will give them experience and opportunity.
The more of both they are offered the more they can expand their understanding of art and the ways they can express themselves. I believe that teenagers need chances where the doors are opened for them to share their creativity and explore who they are with a variety of art opportunities.
