Despite my students' vast diverse backgrounds, they are some of the most inspired workers I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. Every day, my students come in excited to work on new projects. By allowing students to experiment with the most up-to-date technological developments in school, it is giving them the same opportunities students in more funded districts receive.
From Kindergarten through 8th Grade, my students are eager to take every opportunity they are given and explore new ideas.
They are natural engineers and it is truly a gift to watch them grow in their knowledge and love for using technology. In addition to learning more about technology in their world, it helps students engage more in other content areas in school. It is amazing the change in focus a student has on the same information when they are working on it on a computer vs. reading it from a worksheet.
My Project
Over the last 3 years, I have been helping develop a Maker Space for the school community in my classroom. My students and I are beyond blessed for the support from the school, administration, parents, and community and are so very close to having the perfect space for our students. This project is to help form another piece of that puzzle.
The idea of this project is to get a specialty printer that allows students to digitally create works of art and print them with ink and paper that can then be transferred to other materials (such as canvas, wood, shirts).
We were able to fund on a previous project a Cricut Machine and Heat press and this printer will allow the students to design their own creations in multiple colors and have their ideas come to life.
In the Maker Space, students create Passion Projects that are based off of their own interests. We have had many students over the last few years interested in fashion design (one in puppy clothing fashion!). This machine will allow them to create the prototypes of the designs they create so they can show them for school showcases as well as potentially marketing them down the road. In addition, we have had other students interested in board game design. By using this type of print, students would be able to infuse their design on wood or certain plastics and make a more lasting game than just paper glued on cardboard. The applications of the devices are limitless in the hands of these students.
