My project requires a HP Deskjet color printer, ink cartridges, file folders and some necessary computer cords so that my students can print their writing.

Hello! I teach the 3rd grade at a small charter school on the North side of Chicago. Our school was started specifically to serve the local immigrant community. This year I have 20 students in my class and we form a very diverse group with cultural backgrounds from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Bosnia, Nigeria, Vietnam and China.
Many of my students speak English as their second language. Most people meeting them for the first time would never imagine that they speak English as their second language - their social language skills in English are right on! However, academically they have difficulties writing in English. I also have three students in my classroom with special needs who receive special education services to help them specifically improve their writing skills. One thing that really motivates my student's to write is typing and seeing their work in print!
As much as possible, I try to link the projects my students are working on in Writer's Workshop with topics we are studying across the curriculum. For example, last year when we studied water in science, in Writer's Workshop the students each wrote their own non-fiction page to put in a class book called "Water!Water!" The students worked so hard to included non-fiction elements in their writing such as tables, bullet points, charts, graphs, titles and even captions under photos. As third graders it was very impressive to observe and assist them as they created their writing in Microsoft Publisher! Of course, I wanted each of my students to have their own color copy! However, we have a small school with a small budget and color ink is used very sparingly. I was able to print one color copy for our classroom library but each student received a black and white photocopy.
Likewise, when we studied persuasive writing and our magnificent city of Chicago, my students each made a travel brochure about a different Chicago landmark in an attempt to use their writing to persuade tourists to come and visit! Again, they worked so hard on these brochures and I thought they deserved to see them printed and published in color!
We are lucky to have three computers in our classroom, so my students are able to type almost daily. In this proposal I have asked for a printer/copier/scanner that we can have in our classroom and hook up to one of our computers! It will also be very helpful to have a printer when we use the Internet for research - typically my students must walk all the way around to the main office to pick up copies. (That is a long and distracting walk for a third grader!) Finally, the printer also comes with a scanner! It would be so fabulous to be able to scan in student masterpieces and share or edit them on the projector! I have asked for replacement ink cartridges, this will be the most expensive part of the printer for me to maintain, but we will only be printing our final published copies in color, so I expect the ink to last! I also asked for a pack of 3-ring pocket folders - these I use to "bind" our class books together!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my proposal! Having a color printer in our classroom really would help motivate my students to write and would also reward them for their efforts because they will be able to see their masterpieces published in color! Thanks again.
