My students need a laser printer and ink to assist them in submitting their models and research projects as part their STEAM competitions and presentations.
The majority of the students at NMB come from low income families or single parent families. 92% of the students are with Haitian origin background. NMB is a TITLE I school.
Many students have limited access to internet services at home as well as computer input devices including keyboards, mice, scanners, digital cameras and printers.
My students are enrolled in Gifted Chemistry or Advanced Honors Chemistry classes. One of the goals of Miami-Dade County Schools this year is for students to be involved in Digital fluency and to excel in Science Research. This research will help them to explore, discover, and experiment important STEM concepts.
Most of the students have a strong motivation to participate in science research competitions but they lack the confidence to apply to them due to insufficient access to digital technology.
My Project
Under my guidance, for the last seven years NMB students attended numerous competitions: Chemistry/Physics Competition at Barry University, The Brain Bowl, South Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair, State Science and Engineering Fair, Intel International Science Fair.
The students I am working with are strongly determined to accept future STEAM career.
We aim to acquire a laser printer, toner, and various supplies for authentic learning tasks when presenting our research work. Students need these materials to submit their research papers and science boards. Engaging students in research work also contributes to improve students’ critical thinking, teach specific problem-solving and decision-making skills.
