Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach ELA to roughly 30 5th grade students in the Bronx who all qualify for free or reduced lunch, have special needs, learn English as a second language, and/or reside in temporary housing. Year after year, I am surprised and awestruck at how resilient my students are, despite the many challenges that they and their families face. They continually remind me that anything truly is possible with hard work, a team to support you, and a dream to achieve.
I want to provide my students with the support they need and they deserve.
Every child deserves a classroom that is welcoming, that is equitable, and that provides them with the tools they need to succeed in today's changing and fast-paced world. I would love for my students to look forward to coming to school, to get excited about reading and writing, and opening up the world through the power of words.
My Project
Students in urban settings are often at the mercy of lack of resources and underfunding. My students do not have easy access to color printing (or printing at all) for their reports, research, and projects. Students write a lot over the course of the year, but they are limited to "jazzing" up their work with whatever they are able to do with hand-drawing and basic art supplies like crayons and markers. While some students enjoy this, it is less than ideal for many. They want their work to look polished and professional when it is published. Students have recently been doing a lot more work on computers thanks to the pandemic and we would like to encourage them to see how creative and colorful they can be in their work and have it hang or be seen by the school community. This color printer would be helpful in that endeavor.
