Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Certain skills cannot be taught with books and blackboards. I like when my library erupts into active, hands-on learning. Making and doing, in my opinion, build stronger connections to learning and build more knowledge than sitting and listening passively to a teacher.

My school spans grades 3 - 8, and we are part of a full inclusion program for students on the Autism spectrum.

This means that we have a student population with a very broad set of needs. Regardless of grade level or ability, I've found that hands-on activities suit these children better than anything else. They're creative and inquisitive, and the more freedom they're given to explore, the more they'll end up learning.

My Project

My students will work with myself, the art teacher, and the math and science teachers to understand how two dimensional drawings translate into 3d objects, and how 3d shapes can be broken down into two dimensions. This will be especially helpful for the visual and tactile learners in my classes who need to see things and touch things to develop full understanding.

My students fall on the wrong side of the digital divide.

Many don't have access to technology, and those who do often times don't know how to use what they have. I'm hoping to level the playing field. I hope that allowing them to create objects will help them to better understand the power of computers and technology.
