Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are learning disabled. Their disabilities or learning needs are mixed. They are a unique group to me. We are a six, seventh and eight grade, self-contained class. I work with the students in small groups and one on one. We have a close-knit environment, and all of my students are eager to learn.
Our school is located in a low, socioeconomic area.
The school has a limited number of photo copy machines and most of them are outdated. Many times, I need to make copies for the students but the photo copy machines are not working. Most of my students do not have a computer or Internet at home; therefore, it is important that I print out their homework and give them hand outs for them to work home.
My Project
One of the areas that my students are struggling is writing. I print many writing resources to help them improve their writing skills as well as their reading comprehension skills. Many times it is difficult for me to print the hand outs for all the students because the school printers are out of order. The small printers do not last, due to the amount of usage. Most of my students do not have a computer or a printer at home.
Reading and writing skills are imperative to pass the state exams.
We focus on writing narratives, explanatory and expository essays during the school year to be ready for the end of the year exams.
I would like for my students to have the resources that they need to achieve success in the writing test.
I know that if my students become proficient writers in middle school, they would have a greater chance at a better life. My students are eager to learn.
