My Students

Have you ever tried to draw something and it didn't come out quite right? Or, you wanted to explain something to your parents but a picture would have been a better method of explanation? Or, maybe handwriting is just not your forte.

Well, for many of my students, drawing and handwriting are not strengths.

My students come from low-income backgrounds. The poverty rate at my school is near 97%. The students love art and they love math, but find themselves frustrated when they are asked to complete a project "by hand". They love to integrate math with writing as well as with art. The school has a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focus. But, given the low economic status of the district, the technology that we have is not always up to date, or even available. Having access to technology in all of its forms motivates them. Many of my students' parents work a second and third shift and cannot make it up to the school during school hours.

My Project

Having access to a printer in my classroom will enable my math students to be able to create projects that have a technology component to it, rather than being done in a traditional manner, with glue and markers, etc. Students will be able to research data (graphs, statistics, etc.) and print them out in order to include them in their work. We use a digital camera to document projects. Students will be able to print out pictures of themselves to add to their portfolios and other work. These can be used to show parents and other family members what the students are working on. The students will be able to better integrate writing, math and the arts in a way that they would not be able to do without a printer. Having access to this printer will further the students STEM education. Lastly, some of my students have special needs in the area of writing. Being able to type and print their work would address their Individualized Education Plan goals.

Having access to a printer will make a difference in that it will motivate students to complete their math projects.

Students love to print out their work and have it neat and artistic. Additionally, since projects will be interdisciplinary in nature, having a printer will make these interdisciplinary units come to life in a more vivid fashion, not only for the students but for their families and the school community as well. It will meet the individualized needs for special needs students.
