This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a very motivated group of children eager to improve their reading! Each one of my students knows their reading strengths and can express how we are working to improve their weaknesses. By the end of the school year, our goal is to have all children reading at or near the proficiency level.

My third graders live in one of the poorest cities in America.

Violence is prevalent and our community school is their safe haven. They do not receive the support and resources of area magnet/charter schools. These children are amazingly bright, appreciative, and caring. The learning that occurs in school is their ticket to a fulfilling and productive future.

My Project

For the last year, I have been using an old donated computer printer to print out leveled texts to meet students' individual reading levels and target specific skills. I spent over $300 on color and black ink cartridges to keep the printer functioning. It is a model that would not even print in black if a color was low. Our school does not have the money to provide the needed cartridges. I have selected a monochrome printer that I will able to print these necessary leveled books with. My students have shown remarkable improvement through the use of these leveled texts during guided reading. I am even able to print extras to send home with the children so they can "show off" their reading to the adults at home. We are lost without our printer.

Most of my students do not have many books at home and need to be sent home with texts that are perfectly on their levels.

My class also has a limited number of leveled sets of books. The leveled texts that I will be able to continue to print using our class computer printer will be integral in allowing students a chance to meet their personal reading goals.
