Princesses Aren't Just Blondes: Folk Tales From Around the World

My students need multicultural folktale picture books--such as Red Ridin' in the Hood: and Other Cuentos, The Talking Eggs, and Fly, Eagle, Fly--so that they can see this genre in a more global light.

My Students

Energy, passion, excitement, and determination are all words that come to mind when I'm asked to describe the room full of scholars that walk in my door every morning for 180 days. Their home lives are varied and a large percentage of them come from families that qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Many of them have very supportive, involved parents, and others have parents whose attention is spread very thin. But no matter their lives at home, they are so excited to learn new things and love coming to school each day!

My Project

One of my goals this summer was to do lots of professional reading about how to better serve my primarily minority students. Again and again, in multiple books, I've seen how important it is for students to see themselves in the books they read. I have always tried to balance my classroom library with lots of different cultures represented, but this reading has made me even more aware of its importance.

I want my students to know that, while the major motion picture companies make it seem like all princesses are blond Europeans, there are stories of bold, courageous, powerful characters, princes and princesses from all around the world.

We will compare and contrast tales from different places that have similar theme and plot elements. We will also explore the idea of fracturing fairy tales and students will choose one to bring into our culture.
