This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everybody has a favorite book and author. The students in my class need the opportunity to read and experience different authors, series, and book titles so they can discover a topic, series or author that tugs at their heart, making them want more, more, more.

My first and second grade students are learning to read.

The best part is that some are now reading to learn. My students attend a Title 1 school in a low socio-economic area where most students receive free or reduced lunches. It's a rare occurrence when students can purchase books from the monthly book order and even more rare when they visit the public library, which is at least 3 miles away. For many of my students, DEAR (Drop Everything And Read)time is a favorite time of the day. Students borrow books from our class library daily, taking them home to read and share. My students may be young but the book bug has bitten them!

My Project

Additional book titles, including the King Series, will be a welcomed addition to our class library. Many of these books are titles found in the Accelerated Reader program. Many of the titles are of high interest and provide both grade level and above grade level reading opportunities. A number of the requested books are non-fiction, which primary aged students begin to enjoy as they are introduced to factual stories and learn to compare fiction and non-fiction material. Students need and deserve to have literature of high quality for their enjoyment. The organization materials will ensure that students can find the books that are of interest to them in a timely manner. Labeled book bins with easy check out cards make the classroom library a popular area.

When did that happen? Young students deserve to find that love of reading at an early age. By funding this project, my current class as well as future classes will be introduced to a number of books, authors, and series that just may become that favorite that they speak about and recall so fondly.
