Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is home to 26 incredible first graders. Our arts-focused K-8 public school is located in a predominantly low-income and urban community with a large bilingual population, which presents both challenges and opportunities.
My students are incredibly curious, active, quirky, and compassionate, and have diverse interests, backgrounds, and needs.
We spend our days together singing, asking questions, reading, writing, discussing, working with numbers, learning about our world, and striving to make our classroom community more inclusive, supportive, and kind.
My Project
My students will use these journals for daily reflections, creative writing, responses to writing prompts, and written communication with me. We'll begin a morning writing routine during which students can respond to a prompt or free write. If a student is upset or frustrated, they will be able to use their journal to express how they're feeling or write a note to me. I'll read and respond to students' journaling frequently. Young writers get stronger by writing a LOT, and these journals will provide them with a private, informal space to write freely. I'll be able to monitor their development as writers and strengthen my relationships with students through written communication. The journals will also become a social-emotional teaching tool as students learn to process, express, and reflect on their feelings through writing.
