Primary Resources in Their Hands: Tablets to Enhance Writing

My students need a multi-touch netbook/tablet for use in connecting with primary sources (Skype) and web resources for research to enhance their writing skills.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Rivera's classroom raised $763

My Students

As part of their goal to become better writers, second graders must learn to use primary sources as well as other reference materials as part of their research. The challenge these students face is access to information/experts not available in the classroom. Access can only happen via the web.

Twenty-four second grade students from diverse cultural backgrounds attend an elementary school in an urban area of California.

Over 55% of the students in this school have been identified as disadvantaged (Title I). More than 15% of the students in this school are classified as English Learners. The students in my classroom do have school-issued e-mail accounts and use the accounts to communicate with others via written, oral, and artistic means. This happens through some access to technology resources, expanded reading and writing experiences, and hands-on experiential activities.

My Project

Because this school has provided both wireless access to the Internet and e-mail accounts (Google Apps for Education), the students are beginning to discover how their writing can be enriched via web resources, videoconferencing connections with experts, and collaboration through Google Docs. Bringing in a mobile means of putting those resources into the hands of the students will allow the students to take their writing experience outside the classroom walls (to take video and photos of their surroundings as they take field trips and conduct interviews) and also help them realize that they too can become primary sources of information of their own environment that others outside the school can access via the Lenovo ideapad.

The ability to research and communicate collaboratively around the skill of writing creates a culture of learning where each student values each other's contributions to the learning environment.

Donations to this project means support of creating citizens that learn about the people around them and value the work that others share both face-to-face and virtually. Such learning is uninhibited when obstacles such as a lack of access to resources and mobility have been removed via tablets.
