Primary Resources in Their Hands: Research Captured by Video

My students need a digital camcorder and memory card to document their research, including interactions with field experts and interviews with peers.

My Students

As part of their goal to become better writers, second graders must learn to use primary sources as well as other reference materials as part of their research. The challenge these students face is the ability to accurately record information from interviews. A camcorder serves as the solution.

Twenty-four second grade students from diverse cultural backgrounds attend an elementary school in an urban area of California.

Over 55% of the students in this school have been identified as disadvantaged (Title I). More than 15% of the students in this school are classified as English Learners. The students in my classroom do have school-issued e-mail accounts and use the accounts to communicate with others via written, oral, and artistic means. This happens through some access to technology resources, expanded reading and writing experiences, and hands-on experiential activities.

My Project

Because this school has provided both wireless access to the Internet and e-mail accounts (Google Apps for Education), the students are beginning to discover how their writing can be enriched via web resources, videoconferencing connections with experts, and collaboration through Google Docs. The field experience through videoconferencing and face-to-face interviews can be reviewed when students can relive the experience though video recordings of the events. The students take their writing experience outside the classroom walls (as they take field trips and conduct interviews), but also bring them back through video recordings. And they too can become primary sources of information of their own environment as they become the reporters of information they have gathered through the use of a digital camcorder.

The ability to research and communicate collaboratively around the skill of writing creates a culture of learning where each student values each other's contributions to the learning environment.

Donations to this project means support of creating citizens that learn about the people around them and value the work that others share both face-to-face and virtually. Such learning is uninhibited when obstacles such as a lack of access to resources have been removed via video recording.
