Primary Resources In Their Hands: Mission Magic Tree House

My students need the Magic Tree House Boxed Set and a multi-touch Android Tablet with case to analyze/research elements of literature, including setting, plot, and characters.

My Students

As part of their goal to become better readers, second graders must explore primary sources from both fiction and non-fiction. Analyzing fiction in order to draw out facts is an undervalued literacy skill. The Magic Tree House series and its web site serve as the ideal vehicle for developing that skill.

Twenty-four second grade students from diverse cultural backgrounds attend our elementary school in an urban area of California.

Over 55% of the students in this school have been identified as disadvantaged (Title I.) More than 15% of the students in this school are classified as English Learners. The students in my classroom have school-issued email accounts and use the accounts to communicate with others via written, oral, and artistic means. This happens through some access to technology resources, expanded reading and writing experiences, and hands-on experiential activities.

My Project

My students need the Magic Tree House Boxed Set and a multi-touch Android Tablet with case. The Magic Tree House series is truly engaging for young readers. The access to this literature will allow students to develop skills in drawing out historical facts from a fictional story. Research done through use of Tablet technology will allow them to research the actual history behind the situations that Jack and Annie are challenged with and also access The Magic Treehouse Website to complete missions and track their progress in Google Docs or Sites with an online End-of-Mission Journal.

The ability to research and uncover historical facts within fiction creates a culture of learning where each student develops an appreciation of the depth in which literature like The Magic Tree House series provides.

Such learning is uninhibited when obstacles such as a lack of access to resources and mobility have been removed via book collections and Tablet technology.
