This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Remember your first day of middle school? For many, it can be an intimidating moment. You're surrounded by new faces, you have three times as many teachers, and you are suddenly the youngest in the school. At the same time, you are wrestling with coming into your own identity and building new relationships with others. For students who identify as LGBTQIA+, this process can be compounded by worries about their own gender identity and sexuality, as well as acceptance by peers and family.
As someone who is open about my own queer identity with students, I see firsthand the struggles that many kids face in their journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance.
Our school does a great job of supporting queer and trans students, but one area that still leaves much to be desired is our classroom library. When I first began building this library through donations, Craiglist, and online sales, there were very few middle grade books representing the full range of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, particularly when it comes to representing students of color. Now, there are countless new books written by authors of all identities in every genre.
With this project, I hope to expand the LGBTQIA+ affirming books I own into a larger section of my classroom library, with titles that are accessible to students of all reading levels and interests. Whether they are a beginning bilingual reader, an avid consumer of graphic novels, or a student reading at the high school level, all students will find something to enjoy in these incredible books. I hope that these books will help my LGBTQIA+ students to feel validated and seen, while also opening the eyes of students to a wider range of perspectives and experiences.
