My Students
My students are strivers: cognitively sharp, intellectually curious, and extremely hard working.
Our school is the most ethnically diverse of all New York City's specialized public high schools, and 67% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.
We are an International Baccalaureate school: all of our juniors and seniors are enrolled in this rigorous, college-level program. We consistently rank among the top ten public high schools in New York State (#3 in 2016)! Still, we struggle with the limitations of a public school budget.
My Project
Button making machines allow anyone to create wearable buttons that are personalized and fun! Our Queer-Straight Alliance does a variety of fundraisers and awareness events, and last year's button making was a smash hit in both categories. At that time, we rented a button maker that we quickly had to return. I'd like to have a button maker that our club can keep and use for a variety of events.
Making Pride buttons will allow my LGBTQ+ students to celebrate their diverse identities and raise money for our Queer-Straight Alliance.
Last year, several of our members made buttons that were meaningful to them in a special club meeting. One trans student made a button to remind classmates of his preferred pronouns, and another student made a button in order to come out as bisexual. At a later date, we opened button-making up to all students at our school, and charged $1 for anyone to personalize a button. It was a fun community-building event that drew new club members and raised almost $100!
