I am a special education high school teacher in Queens, NY for students with Autism and other severe disabilities. All 6 of my students are nonverbal and require constant supervision in eating, toileting, transition and mobility. My school focuses on teaching our students volunteerism and making meaningful contributions to the school and local community. Because of my students' unique needs and large reliance on adult assistance, we often create ways in which they can show gratitude and kindness to the community. My students are really passionate about cooking and preparing snacks. Many of my students' IEP goals focus on preparing a simple snack or meal with supervision, which is a skill they have grown to master over the school year. My students would like to spread kindness and show gratitude for our school community by preparing a pretzel stand for the entire student body.
Help supply my students with a convection oven and a deep freezer to set up their pretzel stand!
On Thursdays, my students will prepare and cook pretzels to hand out to the entire student body. Students will make monthly trips to BJS to locate and purchase the ingredients we need. Students will learn to store the pretzels in the chest freezer, and to follow a visual recipe to prepare and serve the pretzels to students during lunch. This community service project of preparing and serving pretzels to their peers is a great way for my students to spread kindness and form positive connections with their peers.
