This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember pretend playing with your friends when you were just a little one? I'm sure you can even recall a specific event! Many of my students don't have this opportunity to pretend play at home, especially with clothes and objects that help them imagine a grander world.
My transitional kindergarten students are young kindergarteners.
These children are being given the gift of time. They are the children who are born after September 1, 2006 and before December 1, 2006 and also the students outside this birthday range who need extra time to transition into school life with better success. Our school is located in a low-income, high poverty area that is predominantly Spanish-speaking. Most of my class does not speak English but they are so willing to learn!
Gang violence has also been on the rise in the last year and it has hit too close to home. A student's father was murdered this past May due to gang violence and during recess in February 2011 some of our students witnessed a shooting just across the street from the playground. Even amidst the poverty and lack of safety in our area my transitional kinder students are so excited to be discovering new things and learning new ideas. They are seeing that learning can be fun!
My Project
With these materials my students will be able to aspire to careers while developing vocabulary, oral language skills and social skills. Pretend play is so important in a young child's life. It is so important because they learn appropriate behaviors and social interaction when they have the opportunity to "practice" these behaviors and interactions in pretend play.
This project is important because in our area many children are dealing with a lot of emotional and physical stress.
I'd like to help them learn a way to cope with their feelings but also give them an opportunity to practice appropriate behaviors. Giving them a strong foundation early in life and in school sets them up for future success and that's the goal behind everything I do in my class. I want them to grow up successful and strong and healthy!
