Pretend, Dress Up and Explore Life!

My Project

Every school year, I have at least 18 to 20 students in my Pre-Kindergarten classroom. These students are located in a public school system within an urban, low-income area. I love my students because they are like little sponges. They absorb so much knowledge. They have a pretend skill that is so amazing. I want to help develop that skill with more costumes. They are in love with the Dramatic Play Area.

In this area, they pretend to be someone or something different and extraordinary that reflects their personality.

My students need more career costumes to explore the lives of other people by imitating their actions, feelings and words. They will explore learning to do things like negotiate, cooperate, consider others, develop a plan and act on it. In addition, they will experience how to express and listen to thoughts and ideas of others and their own. They will learn certain tasks and roles to become responsible as they explore life.

Books will be read to the class about each career. Students will learn the roles and responsibilities and then they will be given a chance during Dramatic Play time to recall and act out what they remember. Dress-up and dramatic play engages a students’ brain and memory as they remember what they’ve seen or heard from the informational text. They will try to put on the chef’s costume and pretend to cook. They will have an opportunity to put on the doctor’s costume and pretend to take care of other students. They will explore the firefighter’s costume and put out fires. The various costumes will give my students lots of space to pretend, develop social skills, language and cognitive skills.
