About My Students

My EAST students are some of the most generous that I have ever taught. They care deeply about the school and the community. Esmeralda, Sydney, Toni, and Samantha want to help not only other students at school but they have been looking for a way to extend that help to our community.

We used the Cricut from the last Donor's Choose project for our school hunger project. It was then that the students saw the opportunity to expand the use of the Cricut to t-shirts for the school to use. So we sat down at the computer together to create another project.

My students want a way to use their knowledge of social media and the t-shirt movement. T-shirts are always a great way to spread a message whether that is for a club or a cause. We want to turn our EAST room into a t-shirt shop for our campus.

My EAST students will use this as an opportunity to operate a business within the school and to learn a skill. They will learn quality control and how to put out a product worth selling. This will create teamwork among them and pride in themselves. They will use English and math skills in marketing and creating the products. Creating and producing a product for sale is the best way to get students ready for the real world.

The students, especially the boys, really took to using the Cricut. We made our own tshirts and they did everything. During that process, one of them said, "we could make shirts for everybody." Thus, this project was born.

In Their Own Words

We want the EAST room stuff to be used by all students. We have so much technology in our class that doesn't get used by anybody but us. We have a Cricut that we use and we need a heat press to create our shop. EAST is about using our stuff in our classroom to help our community. This will let us do that.

We have developed a lot of skills by being in EAST. Some of us already know how to use Photoshop. This project would allow us to use those skills. That would make us a valuable source at our high school. Making a good product would also give us skills in leadership.

We get t-shirts all the time at our school. Companies make a lot of money and we could use that money to help our school. We have community projects in EAST that need money. By being the t-shirt shop, other clubs can get inexpensive shirts and they can have a hand in making them too. This project would help everybody.
