Preserving Memories Through The Eyes Of A Child

My students need a camcorder, three cameras, and DVDs, computers and other materials to record their first grade year's experiences.

My Students

Documenting experiences and events from my students' first grade year is something I do every year. I would now like to have my students be the photographers and have them create the memories by taking the pictures and videos and writing journal entries based on reflections on their work.

I teach first grade in rural Northern California.

I have 25 curious and energetic students who love to play, do science, read, and do art. Since I am with these kids for six hours a day, I believe it is important to document their time with me so I take videos and pictures of them playing, reading, acting, and singing.

My Project

I am requesting a camcorder, cameras, recordable disks, and computers to help document our year long experiences in first grade. I have been reading about the Grace Sarah Lily Foundation and have been touched by their story. Their father has inspired me to create this project to preserve memories of my students just like he is preserving the memories of his daughters through his support of arts in school. The materials I requested will be used throughout the year to take pictures and videos of my students' experiences. The computers and photo software will be used by the students to upload the pictures of our performances, of kids reading, and of our field-trips so students can process the pictures into a slide and video show. We will also use the cameras to do an annual photography unit on still life, black and white photography, and motion. Instead of 25 kids sharing one camera, they will have more materials at their disposal which will make a more efficient classroom.

My mother kept a box all of my papers, projects and pictures from my school years.

My daughter and I enjoy going through the box looking at all of the keepsakes. I want to provide this for my students. I want them to have something that they can take with them at the end of their first grade year that is a reminder of their year in my classroom.
