My students need linking letters, playdough, theraputty, and more to work on their fine motor skills to properly learn to print with a proper tripod grip. We need an equipment cart to get to the yard.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have speech and language delays. Many of my preschoolers can not hold a pencil or crayon appropriately. By teaching them pencil grasp by using sand, playdough and markers, they will be able to go to kindergarten on time with proper pencil grasp and hopefully printing their own names.
I teach in an elementary school in a great neighborhood.
My students are Speech and Language Impaired and are bussed in from lower income neighborhoods. This is a Special Day Class. More than 60% of my class is on the free lunch program.
My children are highly motivated to learn. They learn from example and through play. We work on all aspects of readiness skills with a speech/language emphasis.
Many of my students have fine motor skill delays. We use multiple ways to teach motor skills for coloring, cutting and holding a pencil.
My Project
We need an equipment cart to get items we need, such as, cones, balls, and roller racers to the yard without constantly dropping them. The children love to help and can push the cart thus fostering independence.
The other items are for fine motor skills. Some of the children have sensory issues to touch and using the sensory sand, tubs and playdough will help with these issues. The scissors, tweezers, and scoops help with cutting skills. The theraputty and sensory balls help some of my students to remain seated and listening while having something to do with their hands.
Independent working skills are paramount in all children's lives even preschool.
The equipment cart will get the playground toys to the yard without adult assistance. The children love to help!
The fine motor skills will improve greatly with all these different types of activities to learn to manipulate items with tweezers while counting as well as learn to correctly hold a pencil and scissors. All of these activities will have them ready for kindergarten.
