Preschoolers Having Fun In The Kitchen!

My students need small kitchen appliances including a blender, toaster oven, sandwich press, and egg cooker, as well as a table top teaching easel, and no-spill pitchers.

My Students

Good nutrition is the basis for healthy living & ensures proper growth & development; that's why it is important to teach kids how to make healthy, delicious snacks from an early age. My preschoolers need your encouragement to take risks with the foods they eat & be open to trying a wider variety.

I work in a preschool class for children with autism spectrum disorders.

My room is located on an isolated site with 5 classes that only serve children with special needs. Because we are a preschool site, we do not receive Title I or ADA funding because those programs do not assist preschools. However, because we are a special education site, we do not receive the funding that other preschool programs receive such as HeadStart. This means that any "extras" we need are not likely to be purchased by the school district. Children with autism can be very picky eaters & many have poor nutrition as a result. Instead of being willing to try a variety of foods, my students prefer one taste or one texture. We try to overcome these strong preferences in our weekly cooking centers. Each week, we select a recipe based on our theme, "cook" it, & share it. I say "cook" because we do not have the proper materials in our kitchen to really COOK.

My Project

I am requesting a variety of small kitchen appliances in order to stock our kitchen with the materials we need to expose my preschoolers with autism to all of the wonderful foods and textures available to them. With these tools, our weekly cooking activities will be enhanced and the learning of following a recipe, measuring, mixing, and actually COOKING, will begin. Each week, we will follow a recipe related to our weekly preschool themes and work together to complete it. The magic happens when the kids actually TASTE their creations, even if only a small bite, and realize that not everything they eat has to be crunchy, or salty, or orange! What's best is these materials will not only benefit the preschoolers in my special education classroom but ALL of the preschoolers in our school because they all rotate through the kitchen on a weekly basis.
