My Students

Our program serves children who are identified as at risk and children with identified disabilities or delays. My classroom currently is a mixture of children who are 3 and 4 years old. I have a very diverse group of students in my room—socioeconomically, ethnically, and linguistically—as well as multiple ability levels.

For most of my students, this is the first time they are away from home for an extended time each day.

I pride myself in creating a safe and comfortable environment for my little ones to grow and bloom.

I believe very strongly that play is the way the children in my classroom learn best. I also strongly believe that early intervention is the key to success for the children in my classroom. We spend the vast majority of our day exploring and what may look like playing but is actually the work of children. Of my 15 students, 11 are expected to move on to kindergarten in the fall.

My Project

Writing is one of my favorite activities of our day. I just love seeing my little ones express themselves. We always talk about how we can be authors and tell our audiences what we are thinking. It's amazing to see the progress my students make month by month. They start off with unrecognizable drawings and scribbles. Then they start figuring out how to use shapes to draw buses and trucks!

Eventually, they learn that if they can think it, they can say it, and if they can say it they can write it!

They can write books just like real authors! I am in need of replenishing our writing center materials. My students love making books so we will be using the construction paper and other paper to make books. They will use pencils and pens to get those amazing ideas down on paper. Finally, I am looking forward to using the writing journals to monitor their writing progress throughout the year. I will be able to share their progress with parents in their end of the year packets.
