Preschool Social Emotional Toolkit

My Project

I teach Special Education to preschool age students from 3-5 years old on the Big Island of Hawaii. I serve students with a variety of needs such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Delay, and Speech and Language Delay or Disorder. My students work hard and they are super excited to explore, to discover and to grow.

COVID-19 has impacted my students social emotional learning, interaction, and communication through mask-mandates and social-distancing.

Although wearing masks has allowed my students to safely attend school this year, it has impacted their ability to learn social emotional awareness by recognizing facial features in others to describe and understand basic feelings such as happy, sad, angry, or scared. Wearing masks hides these basic facial features to recognize and develop empathy for themselves and their peers. Learning to vocalize their own feelings is a challenge for all of my students as masks impact oral motor skill development when learning to use verbal/vocal speech.

Social distancing while allowing my students to play safely at school, has impacted their social emotional learning to share, take turns, play cooperatively and engage in basic social interactions with their peers.

The requested resources will directly relate to helping my students advance their social emotional learning or overall well-being in light of COVID-19 due to the variety of academic content given my chosen materials. I have selected books, puzzles, posters, picture cards, and felt story pieces to teach social emotional learning specifically for preschool age students. I have chosen materials that are variable when working individually, in small groups, or during whole-group instruction at circle time. I have chosen a few sensory materials to aid in social-emotional regulation and all of the materials I have chosen are highly reinforcing and motivating for my students to engage in.
