Preschool Play Therapy

My students need play therapy materials to support my counseling sessions with them to develop social emotional skills and trauma focused play therapy.

My Students

I have the privilege of being one of the first contacts our students will make in their long educational journey. I serve children ages 3-4 who are enrolled in our one of a kind inclusion program. Our population consists of students with special needs (60%) and typical developing students (40%). This gives me the opportunity to teach empathy, emotional regulation, and social skills that will be used for the remainder of their lives.

Before I am able to work with students on their emotional needs, I must first help them to have their basic needs met.

Over 90% of our students qualify for free lunch and are living in households that meet poverty requirements. A large percentage have been exposed to trauma both inside the home and in their communities. I provide uniforms, food, resources for housing, school supplies, blankets, nap mats, coats..., etc so that students can attend school and have the opportunity to receive quality classroom instruction, care, and safety.

Our students are transported from all over the city and for many this time at school is the only chance they have to engage in supervised play, healthy adult and peer interactions, and experience love and safety.

My Project

Toys are children's words and play is their language. The materials carefully chosen will create a safe and fun space. Costumes aid in expressing creativity and working through situational stressors. For example, a child that witnessed a parent being arrested may express this in a police costume in a safe space. They will have the opportunity to work out aggression with a therapeutic bop bag. We will work on social skills through art therapy. I will use sand play therapy and dollhouse materials to help children recreate situations or experiences they are struggling with. My goal is to create a welcoming, fun area where children will feel safe and loved. Through play therapy, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behavior, develop problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways of relating to others. Please help me to create a therapeutic relationship for our students.
