Preschool Pals: Weighted Puppies to Make a Peaceful Preschool

Help me give my students weighted puppy shoulder wraps and lap pads to help them and their fellow preschool class calm down and relax.

My Project

My students are prekindergarten students who meet the state requirements and are labeled as being "at-risk" of not succeeding; thus, they are placed in the program to help them succeed. They are four years of age and live in a medium-large city. My school follows the "Nurtured Heart" philosophy, where we work to find greatness in each child. In my classroom, I try to make each child comfortable and part of our school family. Many of our children are learning how to regulate emotions; our calm corner is in regular use, as children learn how to calm down and relax.

Temple Grandin says, "Pressure is calming to the nervous system." I am requesting 2 lap weighted puppies and 2 shoulder weighted puppy scarves.

These will be shared with the preschool room next door, so that each room has a pair of weighted puppies to use in our calming corners. Our children will have access to these puppies when they need to calm down and relax. Studies have shown that this extra weight helps children regulate their bodies when they are under extreme stress and emotional need.
