My Students
My classroom mainly serves students from low income immigrant families. Many of the students enter the classroom with minimal English language skills. The curriculum we use puts a heavy focus on literacy and language development.
My students are extremely curious.
They enjoy activities where they can explore using their senses and take delight in activities that allow them to be creative. These type of activities allow them the opportunity to learn and explore while quickly developing their English vocabulary. Many of our students are speaking English fluently by the end of the school year!
My Project
My school has an established literacy curriculum, but nothing to supplement that curriculum with science, math, social studies, art, or music. My students love to build and be creative in the block center. Many of them enter the classroom speaking very little English. Building and creating is a good way for the students to get involved with very little language skills. It also gives them an opportunity to build their vocabulary and work cooperatively with other students.
I would like to create a science/engineering curriculum to use in my classroom that fosters my student's creativity.
I am requesting books and materials that are safe for preschoolers to build with. We will read a variety of books and create design challenges from those stories. I would like to see all of my students develop a richer vocabulary, while giving them confidence to be creative and think outside the box!
