Prepping For the New School Year

Help me give my students a year of feeling structure, encouragement. equity, and fun … all in math class! 😃 Everything, from flowcharts and math center activities to emotion management coloring books, will help me achieve that goal.

My Project

My students are a bundle of nerves when they start middle school. They come with colorful personalities, creative minds, and an eagerness to fit in. Many deal with more than they should have to as children. When children enter my classroom I want them to feel safe, welcome and in charge. Routines and structures help students know what to expect. Whether they are great mathematicians or not, they have a chance to own the experience in my classroom. They can run things. I want students to come in the classroom and grab their popsicle job sticks, pass out books, say the daily affirmations, push aside frustration for a moment to grab the incentive cards’ hole puncher, and feel confidence in the classroom.

Even though I only teach one subject, math, I recognize that I much teach the whole child.

Once my students feel safe and recognize that things are fair in the classroom, they need to learn how to manage emotions. It is hard to learn when you feel angry. I’m looking forward to our Mindful Monday lunch bunches. That’s when I invite children to color, vent, share affirmations, and solutions. The coloring books are going to be a hit!

Lastly, we have to have fun! Math center games have proven to increase engagement with math. Last year, my 6th graders began choosing math games over Connect Four and Uno, which were their defaults during down time. 😃 Memorization comes a little easier when students are trying to win a game.
