Preparing My Students for Spanish in the Real World!
Help me give my students the opportunity to hear and use authentic resources to strengthen their aural comprehension. Students express that the hardest part about learning Spanish is understanding native speakers; this is where Yabla comes in!
I teach Spanish in an urban high school with a diverse student body. Our students mostly come from middle to working-class African-American families.
My students are hard-working and extremely goodhearted young people.
There is a strong sense of community within the school.
In my classroom, I have students who range from aspiring to go to Harvard to happy to just pass the class. I have students with low motivation who need engaging materials to keep them focused and keep them believing that they can do it and succeed.
My Project
Students have always expressed to me that they feel the least confident understanding Spanish when it's spoken. Yabla is a site that provides tons of authentic videos that address a range of topics showcasing different accents and cultures.
Practicing aural comprehension with videos on Yabla will help my students feel more confident and prepared to use Spanish outside of the classroom.
The activities that the teacher can chose to assign to videos hold students accountable for showing their understanding of the video. At the same time, this is a low-stakes way for students to practice aural comprehension in a low-pressure environment.
