Help me give my students hands on math manipulatives, so that they can empower themselves to prepare for life, outside of the classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I love coming to school each day and seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter of my students. School is not easy for them, yet as soon as they enter our classroom, they are eager for the day to begin. They know there are expectations to be met, schedules to follow, and lessons to be learned. In addition, they know they will be fed, cared for, and be held accountable for their choices.
“The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics.” – Paul Halmos
This is the third year we are open as a Charter School. We began as a K-2 school, and as of this year, we are a K-4 school, and we will continue to build onto our school each year. Our student population come from homes that are below the poverty line, where 90% of the families are economically disadvantaged. The majority of our students come from homes where the only language spoken by their parents is Spanish.
My Project
From the very first day of school, I began introducing the value of each coin to my class. As each day passes, we add a coin to our “piggy bank” and count it to represent the amount of days we are in school. In addition, they are given an amount, and they have to figure out on paper which coins are needed. By the time we get to the actual lesson on coins and how to count them, they are familiar with it. I would like to be able to give each of my 22 students a pouch filled with various coins, so that each morning I can have them personally touch and count their own coins to become more confident. This is a skill they will take with them outside of the classroom. In addition, having each student have the opportunity to manipulate their own clock, will assist them when it comes to telling time, understanding how to read a clock, and understanding how we can determine how much time has elapsed over a given period. This as well will be a skill they need to master that they will use forever.
These are two skills we may take for granted, however, for my ELL students, it can be a hard concept.
Lastly, the tape measure will be a useful tool when we are working on investigating larger areas. As of now, I have my students make meter sticks out of paper, however, they are easily ripped, become unglued, or are not properly lined up. Having the tape measure will make them feel like they are having a real world experience. All three of these larger items will be useful tools that can only benefit them and prepare them for skills they will use for their lifetime.
