My Students

I am a third-year Special education teacher at a Title I high school in New Mexico.

I have a wonderful group of students who I have the privilege to teach.

They are clever, fun, hard working and ready to learn. However, there is little to no funding at our school for special education. We were supposed to have access to $30,000 for special education resources for the 2017-2018 school year, but were denied resources that were requested. I teach 5 classes, 4 of which I have limited or outdated resources for. I am a life skills, vocational skills, occupational skills and English 9-12 grade teacher for students on the career pathway for graduation.

I want to provide my students with the quality education they deserve, but have limited funds to do this. I supply all school supplies because my students are in high poverty/ low income. I order a lot of materials with my own money, just so I have something relevant to teach.

My Project

The class set of textbooks, "Preparing for Life and Career" will give students in my life skills classes the opportunity to determine what they need to be successful after high school. I work at a title I school, and we can not afford much to support students in special education. Unfortunately, my school can not afford to provide textbooks for my classroom, so I am reaching out to donors to get support so that my students can get their needs met.

I think that these textbooks will be an amazing resource for my students because they dive into topics such as developing relationships, housing, transportation, managing a career and preparing meals.

All the topics discussed in "Preparing for Life and Career" will be helpful for preparing my students for life after high school. I work with students on a lot of hands on projects related to these topics, but it would be nice for the students to have other resources available to them as well. I am also trying hard to reach different types of learners in my classes and with limited resources I am only able to do so much. I am hoping that with your help, we can better prepare these students to be successful in life after leaving the safety of high school. I feel that these textbooks will benefit my students by providing important information that will help them become functioning members of society.
