I teach 10th grade DC History and 11th grade US History in a public charter high school in Anacostia. 95% of my students come from Wards 7 and 8. Although my students come from neighborhoods full of crime and poverty in our nation's capital, our school is a beacon of hope for our students and their families. Our school ensures that 100% of seniors will be accepted into at least one college before they graduate.
In order to prepare my students for college, my students need to develop their reading and writing skills. On average, my students are 4 to 5 grade levels behind their peers. This makes the task before teachers incredibly difficult because we are playing catch-up. Unfortunately, our school does not have the funds to purchase some necessary supplies that would increase their likelihood of being prepared for a competitive college.
This is where you come in. One of the biggest tragedies is that my students do not have access to dictionaries or thesauruses in my classroom. This will help them become better readers and writers and will allow them to learn how to use something as basic as a dictionary. Having dictionaries in the classroom will truly make the students take more ownership of their eduction and force them to understand the importance of words...and using words correctly.
These dictionaries and thesauruses will truly help my students prepare for college. If they understand how to use a dictionary, they will become much stronger writers, which is something we really work on at our school. You will allow my students to feel more confident and prepared when they first step into their college class.
