Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The American Dream is the steady job, the house with the white-picket fence, the car, the family... As 12th-graders about to step out into the world on their own, my students need basic financial skills to help them realize their own vision of the American Dream.

I am so fortunate to teach in a school that is entirely composed of recently immigrated students from around the world.

As a teacher of U.S. government and economics, I hope to empower my students to take part in the U.S. democracy and the economy. My students are teenagers from over 30 countries around the world, and they are all new to America and to the English language. They come from China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Tibet, Nepal, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Ukraine, Mauritania, and many other countries. And the beautiful thing about our school is that all of these students learn to collaborate in class and build their English skills and their content knowledge together. It is a community of caring, respect, and generosity and I feel very lucky to be a part of it.

My Project

My students will use these materials to develop the basic financial skills they need to survive as high-school graduates on their own. By playing The Game of Life, they'll have the chance to have fun while building basic background about job-searching, saving and spending, purchasing big ticket items, and more. The cartoon books on economic concepts will help them understand ideas like loans and interest, banking, and investing.

My students are on the cusp of graduating high school and starting life on their own.

This is made all the more challenging for them as all of them are recent immigrants who are still very new to the English language. Comprehending the specialized and at times arcane language of money is going to be a struggle for many of them. These simple materials--board games and cartoon books--will help them understand personal finance and help give them knowledge as they head into life on their own.
