This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember your first school experience? Remember the songs, the fun and the toys? My preschool students with special needs love those same activities. Unfortunately, hand-on materials that are developmentally appropriate to meet their needs are scarce.
My students are preschool children with special needs, including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, speech and language delays, developmental disabilities and cognitive delays.
I have two students in wheelchairs and another student with mobility problems. They are three to five years old. My students live in a poverty stricken area. All of my students receive free lunch. Despite that, they are full of love and light. They love playing and they need toys that are developmental appropriate and easy for them to manipulate. Due to the lack of funding, the material I am requesting would not be a possibility for them. Please help me make their school experiences more meaningful and hands on.
My Project
My students need a variety of 12 stimulating toys to meet their educational and physical needs. My preschool students with special needs will benefit from developmental appropriate toys. A few of my students have very little hand strength. They are unable to grasp toys independently. I would like to provide them with toys that will build the small muscles their hands. The Pop and Play Inchworm is small enough to fit in their hands and light enough that they will be able to play with it independently. The Busy Baby Activity Tote has big buttons and easy open doors that they will be able to explore. The star builders will help my students connect and build. The Hide and Seek Beehive, Let's Go Fishing is soft simple activity that will help my students learn concepts like counting, sorting and color recognition. The Touch & Learn Picture Cards will help my students build language. Having access to these materials will help my students develop important skills such as fine motor, communication, social and cognitive skills. Hands on material is essential for my students.
The material that was selected will help my students totally engage at their ability level in their classroom.
These items will reinforce learning goals and have the potential to improve their quality of life, inside and outside the classroom. My students need hands on material that they can interact with so that they can fully participate to the fullest extent possible.
